Five lessons from teaching social media to the first Meristem cohort

What happened when we treated social media as a career skill, not a hobby.

Peace teaching a TVET class at Meristem

Facilitating Social Media Communications, Brand Strategy and Public Relations for the first Meristem cohort has been one of the most rewarding things I've done this year. Here's what I've learned so far.

1. Start with the audience

The first question is always who you're talking to. Everything else depends on it.

2. A brand is more than a logo

Purpose, values and voice matter more than colours and fonts.

3. Consistency builds trust

Showing up regularly, in the same voice, is what makes people believe you.

4. Every post shapes perception

PR isn't just for crises. Every public message affects how people see you.

5. These are career skills

Social media manager, communications officer, brand strategist: the skills open real doors.
